Submit your backcountry observations, win gear from Friends of the CAIC and Weston

Avalanche season is here, whether it looks like it or not.

Just this past weekend backcountry travelers sparked a pair of slides, one west of Uneva Peak at Vail Pass, the other north of Silverton in the San Juans. Neither one resulted in burials or injuries. Both were on windloaded, easterly slopes.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center knows you are their eyes and ears in the backcountry, and they want to reward you for sharing what you see.

Starting now, Friends of the CAIC is partnering with Weston Snowboards to raffle off outdoor gear in exchange for your backcountry observations. Here’s how it works:

  • 1. Get into the Colorado backcountry.
  • 2. Submit observations through the CAIC app or website, like:
    -Cracking or collapsing
    -Snowpack structure and conditions
    -Heavy snowfall
    -Wind transport
    -Rapid warming
    -Red flags and changing conditions
-Good or bad skiing or riding
  • 3. Stay tuned for your chance to win!

Every month, now through May (at least), they pick a winner at random. Up for grabs are Weston splitboards, snowboards and skis, plus other gear from CAIC partners.

The snow is marginal, for now, but we know you’re getting after it anyway. Why not get after free gear at the same time? What you see and share helps everyone stay safe out there
