Summit claims 8 titles at league track and field champs

The fastest kids at Summit High School are getting faster at the exact right time.

Tigers track and field claimed seven individual titles and one relay title at the Western Slope League championships in Grand Junction May 2-3. The girls ran away with the team crown. Coach Mike Hagen expects the boys to finish second when revised results are ready.

“You raced like champions in Grand Junction,” Coach Hagen told his team after the championships. “With one to two weeks of racing remaining this season, your hard work and competitive instincts are showing in fantastic racing.”

Leading the Tigers charge was Faith Fox with three titles in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and long jump.

Adding firepower on the distance track was speed demon Josh Shriver, claiming two league titles for boys 1600-meter and 3200-meter.

Multi-sport state champ Ella Hagen won the girls 3200-meter title and Jay McDonald took the boys 800-meter with a personal best.

But our favorite storyline of the weekend – correction: the season – has been the girls 4×800-meter relay team of Teagen Barth, Saige Heflin, Ruby Snyder and Avery Russer. These girls won the league title by one-tenth of a second ahead of rivals Eagle Valley, adding to a season’s worth of podiums.

But the work’s not done. With a few “last chance” meets before state May 15-17, the relay team must wait until the final second to learn if they’ve qualified.

Ella Hagen, Josh Shriver and Faith Fox already stamped their tickets to state. Several others could make the cut.
