Summit County Commissioner Eric Mamula is sold on a school district bond worth nearly $195.4 million.
“For me, the biggest piece is this pathways piece,” Mamula tells Krystal 93. “They are not trying to pigeonhole everybody into either you go to college, or you go find a job.”
Mamula knows that some locals are leery about another property tax hike. But he is thinking about what this could mean for students.
“I have a kid that just graduated a couple of years ago,” Mamula says. “I wish he had been at the high school during this time right now, where they’re going to work on these different paths for kids.”
The commissioner is also leery about millions for tearing down and rebuilding 53-year-old Breckenridge Elementary School, until he talked with district superintendent Tony Byrd.
“It does serve a smaller subset of the community,” Mamula says. “But after talking with Tony, the amount of money it would take to redo Upper Blue (Elementary), I think they are making the right call.”
Mamula also likes plans to build teacher housing, carried over from his time as mayor of Breckenridge.
“When I was with the town, we constantly pushed the district to house their teachers,” he says. “This is honestly a great way to do it.”
The school bond is on your November ballots, in the mail next week.
