Summit’s lone confirmed case of a nasty gut bug came long before the cyclospora outbreak

A recent outbreak of the diarrhea-causing parasite, cyclospora, is causing violent illness in thousands of people nationwide.

Summit County health officials tell Krystal 93 there are no local cases today of the infection, cyclosporiasis, which is caused by the parasite.

There was one confirmed case here in Summit, back in March. It was tied to international travel, health officials say. Before that, in July 2025, there was another confirmed case in Summit, that one also tied to international travel.

Cyclosporiasis is nothing new, and it is rarely fatal, although new reporting suggests this latest national outbreak could be the worst on record. The Centers for Disease Control confirms cases in 34 states, including Colorado, with 1,645 positive cases and more than 5,100 suspected cases. New cases are being reported daily. The CDC believes state numbers will be higher than those reported nationally. Many cases might go unreported.

The outbreak went viral (no pun intended) with online reports of “explosive diarrhea.” Certain Taco Bell locations pulled ingredients from menus as a precaution. In Michigan, the state hit hardest by the outbreak, tainted lettuce is likely to blame.
