A suspect drunk driver was busted near Idaho Springs last week for idling in the Veteran’s Memorial Tunnel and then fleeing from authorities.
Sheriff’s deputies found the man stopped on westbound I-70 around 10 p.m. on Jan. 28, according to a Facebook post by Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. His door was open. When a deputy approached, he slammed the door and sped out of the tunnel, “swerving all over the highway, from the closed express lane, to the right shoulder, into guardrails, etc.,” the post reads.
The suspect made it west of Idaho Springs and onto Fall River Road before he finally stopped – amazingly without hitting anyone.
Deputies found him visibly inebriated with glassy eyes and slurred speech. Inside his vehicle they discovered more evidence of drinking.
“When the deputy conducted a search of the vehicle pursuant to probable cause, he found several empty containers of alcohol and a half-empty (half-full?) liter of whiskey,” the post continues.
To top it off, this wasn’t the suspect’s first drunken run-in with authorities. Among his five charges is driving with a revoked license as a habitual offender.
“Good job Deputy Nichols for getting this suspected drunk driver off our roadways!” the post concludes.
See the Clear Creek Sheriff’s page for video of the arrest.
