Traffic up for the holidays but down for the year on the I-70 mountain corridor

The holidays were busier, but the entire year was slower on I-70 at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnels.

CDOT traffic counters show a nearly 13% increase for the two weekends around Christmas and News Year’s:

268,161 vehicles (2024) vs. 238,092 (2023)

The four weekends of December were busier by 8%:

 545,649 vehicles (2024) vs. 466,481 (2023)

But looking back on the year, the average daily traffic on weekends at the tunnels was just barely slower this year:

41,270 vehicles (2024) vs. 41,535 (2023)

Spread that out over 12 months of travel and a few cars here and there adds up to a loss of 292,180 cars:

6,685,777 (2024) vs. 6,977,957 (2023)

This year was the slowest on the I-70 mountain corridor since 2021, but still in the top-5 busiest in history.
