It wouldn’t be homecoming week without the powderpuff football game.
“It was good to see all the parents coming out and just the rest of the students supporting these girls playing flag football,” says Dylan Gonsholt, senior captain on the Summit High football team
“It was a good start leading up to Friday night lights,” fellow senior Quinn Breigenzer says. “It was fun.”
Not only these two standout players this year – they were color commentators at Monday’s powderpuff game, where the competition was so fierce, not a single touchdown was scored.
“Good defensive battle, though,” Gonsholt says. “There were a lot of good blitzes, a couple of turnovers. It was really good. So good.”
But that was Monday. Today the seniors are all business.
“All week we have events at school,” Breigenzer says. “It’s a lot, but once it’s game day, it’s game day. Time to put the work in.”
Tigers football is feeling ferocious after a statement win in Aspen last week, 22 to 6.
“We started strong on the offense, got in the end zone a couple of times in the first quarter,” Gonsholt says. “We had a great defensive performance. Seven turnovers.”
Who was the All Star?
“That would be Dylan Gonsholt,” Breigenzer says. “Four interceptions. He won’t give himself the credit, but we have to give him credit.:”
Dylan laughs. He’s a captain, and he knows the glory goes to everyone except him.
“Breigenzer doesn’t want to shout himself out on the safety,” he says. “He was coming up clutch, getting us the ball back.”
Tomorrow’s homecoming game against undefeated Steamboat Springs will be tough. Before Aspen the Tigers were winless, losing by two-plus touchdowns to both Glenwood Springs and Canon City.
“We need to be better on offense,” Gonsholt says. “I want to see at least three touchdowns from our offense every game from now on.”
Their prediction for Friday: 28 to 21, Summit.
“Coming off the big game last week you couldn’t ask for a better week for homecoming,” Gonsholt says. “We’re going to sink the boat.”
