A 21-year-old skier was killed trying to jump U.S. Highway 40 at Berthoud Pass yesterday.
Grand County Sheriff’s Office got the call around 3 p.m. on April 9. The unidentified skier was jumping the road just west of the summit and came up short, slamming onto the pavement.
The victim was wearing a helmet and other protective gear.
In a press released the sheriff’s office calls it a “high-risk skiing stunt,” saying the man “unfortunately lacked the necessary speed and distance and subsequently landed on the pavement.”
U.S. 40 was shut down for most of the evening yesterday for investigators.
The victim’s name has not yet been released.
