61-year-old Fort Lupton man dies in ski crash at Keystone

A Fort Lupton skier died just before closing time at Keystone Resort yesterday.

Summit County coroner confirms Matthew Chambers, 61, of Fort Lupton, was the lone victim.

Local authorities report Chambers was skiing fast on Haywood, an intermediate frontside trail, when he lost control and veered into a padded light pole.

Ski patrol responded soon after and attempted life-saving procedures while transporting Chambers to a medical center at the base, where he was pronounced dead.

Official cause of death is pending autopsy.

This is the fifth confirmed in-bounds fatality of the 2024-2025 ski season in Colorado and the first in Summit County.

On Dec. 11 at Keystone a snowboarder was critically injured and airlifted to a Denver hospital after falling from Ruby Express, between North Peak and Dercum Mountain. He was adjusting a binding when he fell.
