My Epic Alpaca, A-Basin’s reality show and Red Rocks goes blue on April Fools’

Social media is a lot of things. But on April 1, it’s a gold mine.

Here are some of our favorite posts from the deep and devious depths of Facebook on April Fools’ Day, including a few that turned out to be real.

A-Basin reality show: FAKE

This one ALMOST got us. The survey link is real, the post plays it straight, and who wouldn’t want to star in “Below Deck” at the Legend?

My Epic Alpaca: FAKE

20% off alpaca rides at Peak 8! Someone in the Breck marketing department had a blast with Photoshop. Or maybe they asked a bot to do it (key words: alpaca, high fives). Either way, bravo Breck.

Copper’s My Pet Snowball: FAKE

Like a pet rock only wetter, and less hurty if you huck it at a friend.

Beepy the CAIC mascot: FAKE

Photoshop strikes again with one of the best deep fakes of the day. The background is crisp. The shadow hits just right. And the Friends of CAIC logo? Icing on the fake.

Not fake is the Trailhead Outreach Program, going strong at popular trailheads all across the state.

CDOT’s farmland traffic jam: REAL(ish)

CDOT did not shut down I-70 on the Eastern Plains for sheep crossing today. But the photo is real, taken by a driver in northwestern Colorado back in 2012. Way down south in New Zealand this is the only traffic jam you’ll find en route to most ski fields.

Red Rocks goes blue: FAKE

A dastardly marketing ploy by City of Denver, owner of the world’s most popular outdoor venue? Or simply the right combination of substances?

Manitou Elevator: FAKE

All the scenery, none of the sweat. Even hardcore fitness freaks would trade the last few hundred steps at the fabled Manitou Incline for a ride to the top.

Blucifer handler: FAKE

DIA took a page out of A-Basin’s playbook with a link to a real application. Paul Bunyon, this one’s for you.

Avery’s Green Chile in a can: FAKE

Mmmm… green chile in a crowler. Why this isn’t real, we’ll never know.

Newborns in Congress: REAL

U.S. Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-Lakewood) brought her 9-week-old child to the House floor in D.C. today. She’s fighting for parents to have remote voting rights. This hearing just happened to be on April 1.
