Save your kit from the landfill at Frisco’s free gear repair fair

How many outdoor junkies have held onto a backpack or raincoat longer than a serious relationship?

I know I have. My Mile High Mountaineering (MHM) bag has outlasted partners, jobs, three snowboards, two computers and most of the stuff I put inside it. And it’s not because I’m sentimental. It’s simply the best, most well-built day pack I’ve ever owned.

But nothing lasts forever, even qualify craftsmanship. The right-side shoulder strap is beginning to separate from the rest of the bag, and I don’t have the gift with a needle to repair it.

Tomorrow, my bag gets new life at the annual FREE Frisco gear repair fair. A team of talented craftsman are offering their services for free, repairing zippers, holes and other minor trouble on backpacks, tents and outdoor gear. (Please, one piece per person. They’re not robots.)

But that’s not all! There’s also knife sharpening, basic bike and skateboard tunes, a DIY wash station, and storage wax for skis and boards.

New this year is restringing for guitars, banjos and other stringed instruments.

The Frisco gear repair fair is going down at the Frisco Adventure Park day lodge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And if you need even more incentive to hold onto your favorite kit another year or ten, here’s a little green literature from the town’s Green Team:

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, 146.1 million tons of solid waste ended up in landfills across the country in 2018, with materials most commonly used in outdoor equipment, such as plastics, leather, and textiles, comprising over 29% of that waste.
