Breck, Vail and Aspen are getting a new area code in July

A new area code is coming soon to Summit and neighboring mountain towns – the fourth area code in Colorado.

New area code 748 goes live on July 7 for cities and counties already covered by the existing area code, 970.

This includes Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen, Steamboat and Glenwood Springs, plus Fort Collins, Greeley and Loveland on the Front Range.

“To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission has approved an all-services overlay for the 970 area code,” carrier AT&T confirms. “An overlay is the addition of another area code (748) to the same geographic region as an existing area code (970). The overlay does not require you to change your existing area code or phone number, or how you dial your calls.”

Like AT&T says: If you already have a phone number this will not affect you.

303 was the original Colorado area code and still covers the Denver Metro area. The 719 area code, introduced in 1988, covers southern Front Range cities like Colorado Springs. The 970 area code, introduced in 1995, covers most of the Colorado High Country from Steamboat Springs to Durango and west into Grand Junction.
