Summit Huts is pitching a winter ski hut at Frisco Peninsula

The most accessible backcountry hut in the county could be coming soon to Frisco Peninsula.

Summit Huts wants to build a winter ski hut on the highest point of the peninsula, just east of Crown Point Road near the Tip Top trail.

Executive director Greg Guevara believes this would be the perfect complement to his non-profit’s selection of five existing huts. And his selling point – ease of access.

The existing huts are at least two miles from the nearest trailhead over steep and sometimes daunting terrain. The unnamed Frisco Peninsula hut would be the closest of the bunch, located just a few minutes from the parking lot with a gradual uphill.

Even better, the town would not be on the hook for construction. The only expected cost is $5000 to $7000 for reserved parking and a new winter access gate.

“The U.S. Forest Service is prepared to issue a permit for the construction of a hut, pending a signed decision memo and agreements between the town of Frisco and Summit Huts,” a town memo reads. “Summit Huts would be financially responsible for construction of the hut, managing and operating the hut, and would pay a concessionaire fee to (the town) and the USFS. “

If approved construction starts in 2027.
